Recently, we installed a selection of Glavenir Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIG) in new UPVC window frames by Lomond in Geilston Bay—a home that directly faces the East Derwent Highway, one of Hobart’s busiest roads.
To assess the real-world performance of Glavenir VIG, NVC conducted in-situ sound isolation testing in February 2025, measuring how effectively the glazing reduces traffic noise in a residential setting. The findings demonstrate the power of Glavenir VIG in delivering acoustic insulation where it matters most.
What Makes Glavenir VIG Different?
Glavenir VIG is a breakthrough in energy-efficient and noise-reducing glass technology made by Panasonic. By incorporating a 0.1 mm vacuum interlayer between two glass panes, this advanced glazing system significantly reduces noise pollution while maintaining a slim profile.
For this project, two types of Glavenir VIG were tested:
✔ 6.1 mm VIG (3 mm float glass / 0.1 mm vacuum layer / 3 mm float glass)
✔ 8.1 mm toughened VIG (4 mm toughened float glass / 0.1 mm vacuum layer / 4 mm toughened float glass)
Real-World Applications & Testing
The Glavenir VIG was installed across multiple rooms in different configurations to evaluate its effectiveness in both standalone and double-glazed unit (DGU) setups:
🛏 Bedroom: 6.1 mm VIG / 12 mm argon-filled gap / 6.5 mm laminated glass
🛋 Living Room: 8.1 mm toughened VIG
🛁 Bathroom: 8.1 mm toughened VIG
💻 Study: 6.1 mm VIG / 12 mm argon-filled gap / 4 mm toughened float glass
